BALLARAT GAS CORPORATION OFFICES (FORMER) - Physical Description 1
An early photo survives of the building in its original condition - the window pediments have subsequently been removed, and the facade painted. The building is a pleasing double storey composition on masonry piers with rusticated base course to impost height and matching voussoirs. Within the ground floor arcade a second order is visible surrounding the door and windows. A blind tabernacle with shell motif occupies the splayed corner at first floor level. A delicate dentillated cornice and eaves brackets support a surprisingly plain parapet which may have been stripped.
The overall detailing and use of architectural motifs (e.g. circular transom light, rusticated piers, use of double orders) closely resembles those employed on 54 Lydiard Street. It is possible that Caselli & Figgis were responsible for these two buildings.
The effect of this building has been dramatically changed by the alterations.
However it forms an important corner streetscape element in an important precinct, and is in good condition.Heritage Study and Grading
