Gnarr Creek Air Vent Tower - Physical Description 1
This brick exhaust vent was built in 1884 for the City of Ballaarat. The contract sum was 1200, and the original drawings are held by the Council.
It was constructed over the Gnarr Creek culvert and now forms part of the impressive drainage system of Ballarat. This system was necessitated by the urban development of many low lying areas which were subject to flooding, and in particular Briege Street. The drains feature bluestone and brick work lining of a high standard, particularly the brick vaulted sections. Some road bridges over it carry very fine wrought iron balustrading. This vent is of an octagonal section, constructed of brick with a graceful taper to the free stone quasi doric capping. It rises some 17 metres above a partly dressed and partly rusticated bluestone base'.
The exhaust vent is important as an intact well designed and detailed example of industrial architecture. It is an obvious manifestation of this important and possibly unique drainage system.Gnarr Creek Air Vent Tower - Integrity
