Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The former Jumbunna General Store, Post Office and Bakery at 49 Cruickshank Road, Jumbunna, built c.1900, is significant. This Federation commercial building has a hip and gable roofline with a front gable which was used as the original shopfront, and gablets, including bracketed and battened gable ends. The straight street verandah is supported by turned posts and a boarded valance, while a second, contiguous verandah features a single board dado. The street frontage includes a metal clad, scalloped Dutched parapet. 
The Bakery building at the west corner of the site includes a reinforced brick oven and workroom. 
Non-original alterations and additions, other than those listed above, are not of heritage significance.
How is it significant?
The former Jumbunna General Store, Post Office and Bakery, is of local historic, aesthetic and social significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, although it is unknown exactly when this building was built (c.1893 and 1910), it demonstrates the early development of Jumbunna as a town. The building also clearly illustrates the importance of the town of Jumbunna to the region with the presence of the Post Office. The brick oven in the rear bakery demonstrates the history of bread production within the area. (Criterion A) 
Aesthetically, this is the only extant commercial building from the former commercial strip on Cruickshank Road, illustrating the importance of the building within the town. The building exhibits locally rare architectural features such as the Dutch parapet that makes the building clearly identifiable as a commercial property. The former general store significantly contributes to the aesthetic significance of Jumbunna and Cruickshank Road. (Criterion E) 
Socially, this building reflects the commercial basis of Jumbunna which forms part of the identity of the town. (Criterion G)

      The former Jumbunna Store at 49 Cruikshank Road, Jumbunna is essentially a typical Federation hip and gable dwelling with the front gable used as a shop. The bakery is located to the rear west corner of the site, with the steel reinforced brick oven and workroom contained under a single hipped roof. The store has been extended to the west with a complementary extension of the street verandah, and ntoable elements of the original part of this building include:

      - The hip and gable roof form with gablets at the ridge and bracketed and battened gable ends.
      - The scalloped metal clad Dutch gable parapet to the shop.
      - The straight street verandah with original turned posts and boarded end valance.
      - The original shopfront.
      - The contiguous verandah and shingle board dado to the dwelling.
      - The bakery at the rear.
