Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The former Blanton's Store, at 58 Stanley Street, Toora, built c.1906, is significant. The two-storey brick Federation commercial building and residence has a triangular brick parapet with brick piers at the edge of the parapet. The original shopfront has been retained with its glass panelling above the door and large windows flanking the door. Other key features include:
- Large, narrow windows along the upper East and upper West elevations
- Three upper-level windows:
- a smaller rectangular window flanked by larger rectangular windows
- Originally the building had a double level verandah but both have been removed.
Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not of heritage significance.
How is it significant?
The former Blanton's Store, at 58 Stanley Street, Toora, is of local history and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically this building was constructed in 1906 by the locally renown Rispin Brothers. This building became a local landmark, being known as 'the brick store' for its construction materials. The former Blanton's store demonstrates the development of Toora as a commercial centre for the local district, especially during the period following the establishment of the local b utter factory . (Criterion A)
Aesthetically, this building is a rare example of a two-storey brick shopfront and residence within Toora and the surrounding regions. This brick building, with its double storey height, original shopfront and triangular brick parapet significantly contributes to the aesthetic and historic character of Stanley Street and Toora more broadly. (Criterion E)
