FORMER COACH AND HORSES HOTEL - Heritage Inventory Description
Location of the original 1860s coach and Horses Hotel. Although the hotel burnt down in 1907, some possible original associated features survive, New Coach and Horses Hotel built on same site in 1907. Both located on corner of Maroondah Hwy and Madden St.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Local cultural heritage significance. Associated with some of the earliest hotel construction in Melbourne. Demonstrates continuity and reconstruction of hotel use. Provides historical and some physical evidence of hotel occupation & changing association with Ringwood's early development.
Heritage Inventory Site Features: Former stables (now car park bays) on west boundary, thought to date to 1890s. Location of flats also in approximate location of original log cabin hotel dating to 1860. after cabin burnt down in 1907 a second, weatherboard hotel was built. converted into flats in 1948, although the flats retain some elements of the 1907 hotel such as the kitchen and chimney. Mature introduced vegetation along property borders.
