FORMER PRESTON COUNCIL ELECTRICITY OFFICE - History
The location of the site was unoccupied until 1924 when the Electricity Office is mentioned for the first time in the Sands & Mac Directories. The original office building was replaced in 1961 by red brick offices which are occupied by the City of Darebin.FORMER PRESTON COUNCIL ELECTRICITY OFFICE - Interpretation of Site
The original office building, Preston Electricity Department,existed from 1925-1960. The Preston Council bought the building from the Melbourne Electric Supply Company and reticulated and sold it to the local consumers from 1911. After the formation of the SEC in the 1920s, Preston decided to continue the operation which maintained until the 1990s.
FORMER PRESTON COUNCIL ELECTRICITY OFFICE - Archaeological Significance
The site was built over by 1960. The office building appears to have a raised floor level and is likely that footings and deposits associated with the original structure will have survived.
