Statement of Significance
The Deep Lead Ballast Line consists of a line of raised and formed earth which is still evident across paddocks and in historic reserves.
The Deep Lead Ballast Line is historically and scientifically important at a local level as an example of an industry which used a by product of gold mining technique to assist the emerging network of railways.

DEEP LEAD BALLAST LINE - History
The main railway line was opened in Stawell on 25th May 1876 and extended to Murtoa with an opening ceremony on 17th December 1878 and on to Horsham by 5th February 1879. During the construction of the extension, a spur line was constructed from the Band of Hope :Mine to the Main line to carry ballast up into the Wimmera as far as Dooen.
This is an example of the use of a by product of mining being used to construct the railway line whcih opened up the norht west of Victoria.
