GROWLERS HILL - History
The site appears to centre on the old West Growlers lease. The reef, known as Humbug Reef, was opened in 1855 and the claim was immediately jumped. The new owners worked it until 1863, winning £14,000 worth of gold. In about 1870, D Milleay obtained the lease and worked the mine until 1884, when he formed a company, the Growler’s Hill Quartz Mining Co. This company worked the West and North Growlers mines. The old underlay shaft was taken to a depth of 355 feet and the vertical shaft to 95 feet. Operations were profitable and a new winding plant was installed. After this however, the company struggled and the West Growlers mine was let on tribute in 1886. In 1899 the mine was re-opened by Bell & Schewan, working a good shoot of stone that had been overlooked by the company. They worked the mine until at least 1912.GROWLERS HILL - Interpretation of Site

Heritage Inventory Significance: None
SiteCard data copied on 04/07/2024: The site is just west of the fire tower on Growlers Hill, Rushworth. A deep open shaft has been capped and a high wire-mesh fence erected around it. A large area around the shaft has been bulldozed flat and few traces of mullock remain. Further down the hill is a north-south gash in the ground surface. This is an old open cut on the outcrop of a quartz reef. All around, the hillside has been extensively bulldozed and only a few filled shafts and small disturbed mullock dumps are visible.
