EVANS BROTHERS LIMEWORKS - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site (updated June 2022):
The Evans Brothers purchased the plant and property of A A Smith & Co, Lime Merchants, 58 Queen’s-bridge-street South Melbourne, in 1904. This included lime kilns at Geelong and Sorrento. In 1912, the Evans brothers built two lime kilns at Coopers Creek, which continued operation until the 1920s. By 1914, they had kilns at Coopers Creek and Waratah Bay. The Coopers Creek kilns were serviced by a railway siding from nearby Platina station. During the twenties, Proudfoot's limeworks (possibly the same) were in work, and were considered a tourist attraction for train travellers to Walhalla. Also operating at Cooper's Creek during the 1920s-30s were the Snowflake limeworks. In 1937, a foreman was killed by a fall of stone at a Cooper's Creek limestone quarry. In 1944, the railway line between Platina and Walhalla was closed. Lime-quarrying at Cooper's Creek was revived briefly in the late-1940s, to meet the demand created by CSR's use of lime in sugar processing, but the quarry/ies and kilns ceased operating in 1951, causing the closure of the Erica to Platina railway the following year.
