    Ballarat Trades Hall - Physical Description 1

    This building was built in 1887 to the design of James & Piper, Architect and constructed by Leitch & Atkins.

    The facade is clear cut Baroque composition which is rare in Victoria. The giant Corinthian columns on the facade act as unifying elements in the flamboyant composition. The base storey reads as a plinth for the columns. The internal stairwell is intact. Bluestone treads are cantilevered from the side, with a simple balustrade and square sectioned bannisters. At the top is a coved boarded ceiling with a rectangular skylight (with chamger stopped timber and pendants around the base) but with modern glazing. The upstairs rooms are intact but uninteresting. There is little else of note internally.

    The external flamboyant Baroque facade of this building is unique to the State of Victoria. The building forms an extremely important streetscape element. Situated on the curve of Camp Street, it terminates the vista from Sturt Street and provides added height and variety to the Camp Street precinct. It is relatively intact (apart from the painted facade and new entrance doors and is in good condition.
