Statement of Significance
Statement of Significance as recorded under the Queenscliff Heritage Study 2009
Mythian is of local historical and architectural significance as an example of a modest Victorian residence built in Queenscliff in the early years of its development. Although modified, its original form remains legible. Mythian is also of interest for its historical associations; with early settler James Taylor, who worked in the lighthouse service for many years; and a number of prominent Victorians who either owned or occupied the house in later years, including the Hon. Caleb Jenner MLC, and brewer and businessman Edward Latham.

Mythian, 12 King Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 1
During the period 1867-8(3) he built an eight room stuccoed stone and brick walled house 4) (stone in the outer walls and brick internal walls). He added a striped concave roofed verandah and a picket fence which faced King Street, and an unusual double-hung window and shutters facing St Andrews Street.(S) Aspects of the house which are typical of Queenscliff are the M-hipped roof and the chimney-shaft cornices.
Mythian, 12 King Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 2
Extract from the 2009 study
Mythian is a symmetrically composed rendered brick mid-Victorian house on the north-west corner of King and St Andrews streets. The building is set back from the King Street boundary behind a low garden. A rendered brick fence of later origin extends along the King Street boundary and part of the St Andrews Street boundary. There is a vehicular entrance and shared crossover at the west end of the site in King Street. The east elevation of the house extends along the St Andrews Street boundary.
Mythian has a hipped roof clad in corrugated galvanised sheeting. It has rendered brick chimneys with mouldings at their tops and painted terracotta chimney pots. A cast iron verandah extends across the King Street elevation. This elevation has a pair of double-hung sash windows with multi-paned sashes. These windows are not original, but a sympathetic reinstatement of Victorian-style fenestration, replacing Chicago-style windows that had been fitted to this elevation in the inter-war years. Signage that reads Mythian is also probably of inter-war origin.
Some alterations have occurred to the rear of the house which have extended it along the St Andrews Street boundary and a small addition to the west side of the house which contains the entrance to the house.
