GOLDEN CITY HOTEL - Physical Description 1
The hotel ,that earlier occupied this site was the Adelphi which first advertised in the Ballarat Star on 3 September 1856. In 1900 the hotel underwent alterations designed by E. and B. Smith, architects, when James Coghlan operated the hotel. In December that year the name was changed to the Golden City. The brick. alterations would appear to refer to the existing facade, the face brickwork which is now painted. The hotel is essentially a simple two storey brick building with simple rectangular windows and a plain parapet with a corner mot. of piers with a circular recess which breaks through the parapet as a semi-cir, The date, "1812", is a complete mystery.
The two storied verandah is the main decorative element of 'the building al would appear to be contemporary with the brick alterations. The cast iron support semi-circular patterned brackets with a narrow band of frieze work. The upper storey has the same columns, brackets and frieze work with a balcony broad cast iron panels alternating with' slender cast iron balusters. The .(text missing) are of a decorative and pleasing design. The bull-nosed veranciah roof is.(text missing) at the corner by a gablet with a 'king truss gable end which rises to a finial. This substantial and intact verandah is an important element of this environmental area.
