VIADUCT ROAD RUINS - History
The site was originally Adolphe Wultrich's Vineyard (Geelong Advertiser 4.4.1866) and from the 1870's became Theophilus Evan's Hereford and Erin Orchard.Heritage Inventory Description
VIADUCT ROAD RUINS - Heritage Inventory Description
This site has ruins spread over a considerable area on a hillside, set amongst the remnants of a garden. There are several large peppercorn trees, a very large pine, roses and other plants. Towards the foot of the slope, near the road, is a stone chimney base, which appears to have some walls associated with it. The stone have been laid in mud mortar. Very long grass obscured this area. Adjacent was a possible cistern and a concrete structure (also a cistern?). To the north, cut into the hillside, is a stone structure, apparently consisting of two rooms. This is constructed of random masonry, using bluestone and sandstone in a lime mortar. There is one room set into the hillside, with another area in front with wing walls, paved with large stones. The inner room has a concrete floor, which was probably a later addition. Adjacent to this on the west is a small concrete slab. Further up the hill, to the northwest is another structure that is set on a terrace that has been cut into the hill. This has been built using regularly coursed bluestone masonry, in lime mortar. The front wall has collapsed.
There appears to be considerable potential for further archaeological investigation at this site, although much of it is currently obscured by long grass. Footing of a cottage, its garden and associated otubuilding may be preserved.
