Summerleigh Lodge - Veterans Description for Public
Summerleigh Lodge, at 152 Albert Road Healesville, was bought as the new home for the Corps School in 1951 and became the Army School of Health. Summerleigh Lodge was a large guesthouse built in the 1920s for travellers from Melbourne. The Lodge and surrounding mountains provided a suitable location, atmosphere and grounds to support army training activities. Further buildings were moved from Puckapunyal and Melbourne, including the Second World War Recruiting Depot in Royal Park and added to the grounds of the Summerleigh Lodge.
The gates, known as the Healesville Gates, were removed when the School of Army Health moved to Portsea. Later they formed the seaside entrance to the Army Health Services Sergeants' Mess at Norris Barracks. When Portsea closed, the Healesville Gates were taken to the 1st Field Hospital in Sydney for safekeeping.
