BARBOUR'S AND CROSSLEY'S TRAMWAYS AND LOG CHUTES - History
ROBERT BARBOUR'S "BLACK FOREST SAW MILL" WAS ERECTED ON CAZZA IN THE PARISH OF NEWHAM IN 1856. BARBOUR CONSTRUCTED A TRAMWAY ON THE PLATEAU ABOVE THE MILL AND BROUGH LOGS TO THE HEAD OF A ONE-MILE-LONG CHUTE ABOVE THE MILL. THE DATE OF THE CLOSURE IS NOT KNOWN. WILLIAM CROSSLEY WASA THE PROPRIETOR OF THE "VICTORA STEAM SAW MILLS" ON THE NORTH SIDE OF MT MACEDON BY 1863. CROSSLEY BUILT A SIMILAR LOG CHUTE DELIVERY SYSTEM BUT INCLUDED A WINDING ENGINE AT THE HEAD OF THE CHUTE.BARBOUR'S AND CROSSLEY'S TRAMWAYS AND LOG CHUTES - Interpretation of Site
Barbour's tramway descended west across the slope of Mount Macedon, terminating at the top of a log chute. The chute descended steeply to the west to the site of the mill. The chute today is represented by a surface depression approx 1 metre wide.
Crossley's tramway descended north-west to a log yard and winding engine. At this point, the log chute descended to a mill. Crossley's tramway and log chute formations are extremely overgrown.
