Camp Street Precinct, Ballarat - Physical Description 1
In 1851 the site of the Government Camp in Ballarat was selected on a hill overlooking two of the major gold leads. The Camp accommodated large numbers of military, police and a range of officials associated with the colonial government administration of the goldfields. During the 1850s the Camp became the focus of considerable resentment in the mining community and in late 1854 Government troops were mobilised at the Camp to march to the uprising at the Eureka stockade.
