Ivanhoe RSL - Physical Description 1
Clarivue is perhaps the grandest of the early Medieval Domestic Revival houses in Heidelberg. It is externally near original and possesses most of its original grounds and outbuildings. Prototype buildings may be seen in 15th Century Germany (Houses) Market Place, Miltenberg or Durer t s House, Nuremberg) as well as in Britain (Guild Hall, Lavenham). Half-timbering, a bracketted gable) face red brick) multi-pane casement windows, fish-scale shingling and onion-Pierce balustrading are essential decorative elements) applied to a picturesque multi-gabled form.
Almost identical massing and finish is displayed at 111 Banksia Street [7] although this has been altered. 119 Banksia Street [8] is also similar but has again been altered and is more English than European.
Clarivue is the best of a distinctive Heidelberg Medieval revival substyle which appears to be derived from North European domestic architecture of the 15th Century. It may be the best in Victoria.
Veterans Description for Public
Ivanhoe RSL - Veterans Description for Public
The Ivanhoe RSL, on Studley Road, is located in the old 'Clarivue' House. Builder John W. Brown constructed the house for Fitzroy timber merchant, Wallace Stone. Stone died at Clarivue in 1935 and it was sold in 1936 to R.A. Treganowan (of Ramsay and Treganowan, oil and grease merchants).
Described in 1936 as an 'Early English Brick Residence', Clarivue boasted a wide entrance hall, panelled with fiddle-back Blackwood. There was also a Queensland Maple Staircase, a Biliard Room, Drawing Room, dining room, bedrooms and a breakfast room. Clarivue is the best of a distinctive Heidelberg Medieval revival substyle which appears to be derived from North European domestic architecture of the 15th Century.
