Fortuna Mansion Bendigo - Veterans Description for Public
The 'Fortuna' mansion, at 30-45 Chum Street in Bendigo, was built over a period between the 1860s and 1890s by mining magnate George Lansell. It was one of many grand homes purchased for use by the military during the Second World War. In 1942, the government needed a safe home for the military map making facility and it chose 'Fortuna'. The grounds surrounding it were large enough to build extra accommodation, and it was away from the coast and the capital cities. The site became the Land Headquarters (LHQ) Cartographic Company, a base for the mapping activities of the Survey Corps. During the war period approximately 16 million maps of Australia, its Territories and the theatres of operation in the South Pacific area were produced for the use of the allied Services. This function was continued as a routine peacetime role in the post war years. Two corrugated iron buildings, known as buildings 10 (Reame Store) and 12 (Clothing Store) are the earliest remnants of the army's presence at 'Fortuna'.
