Warrnambool War Memorial - Physical Description 1
The monument is 38 feet tall, made largely of granite with the digger at its base (the promotional material described him as having an expression of "infinite sadness" on his "stern face"). The column (of which only the base is visible here) is topped by the angel of peace made of quote "the best Italian marble". The names of 1100 first world war soldiers who enlisted (including 240 killed) were listed on the surrounding panels of marble between polished granite pillars, to which pillars were added the names of the Second World War dead later in the century. After this war the gates which had stood between the pillars at the back were removed and replaced with a panel which depicts an image which the uninitiated might mistake for the US GIs raising the Old Faithful on Okinawa but which is meant to resemble "the combined activities of the three fighting services".

Warrnambool War Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Warrnambool War Memorial was unveiled on Anzac Day 1926, after years of dispute within the community. It was funded by public subscription and placed on Cannon Hill, a prominent site in the town. The monument is 38 feet tall, made largely of granite with a digger soldier at its base (described as having an expression of infinite sadness on his stern face). The column is topped by an angel of peace made from Italian marble. The names of 1100 First World War soldiers who enlisted (including 240 killed) were listed on the surrounding panels of marble between polished granite pillars, to which the names of the Second World War servicemen were added. After the Second World War the gates which had stood between the pillars at the back were removed and replaced with a panel which depicts an image which is meant to resemble the combined activities of the three fighting services.
