Cheltenham Boer War Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Cheltenham Boer War Memorial, located in Cheltenham Park, was originally situated on the north-west corner of Nepean Highway and Chesterville Roads, Moorabbin. The memorial was established in 1904 and names 47 fallen and returned residents from Moorabbin who served in the Boer War. Of the 47 names, four died; one at Rustenburg, one at Elandshock, one at Wilmansrust, while the place of death of the fourth trooper is not given.
The memorial comprises of a polished red granite obelisk sits on a black basalt base. Originally it had two handsome circular glass enclosed gas lamps and a bronze drinking fountain as part of its construction but these are now lost. The Memorial still rests within Cheltenham Park but was relocated to Park Road.
