Statement of Significance
SoS from 1998 Heritage Study and 2003 Heritage Review:
Recommended Level of Significance: State
The 'Sunbury Gun' is a rare artillery piece of at least state significance. It is a 3 inch calibre Armstrong 12 Pounder, manufactured in England in 1864. This was the first wrought iron type of gun, the first breech loading artillery, and the first rifled gun to be used in the British service. It is a memorial to the Rupertswood Battery of Horse Artillery, established by Sir William Clarke in 1884. It was also one of the type of gun which had been employed in the military encampments on the Rupertswood property during the 1860s and 70s. It was restored by the Army in 1978-80.

Sunbury Gun - Veterans Description for Public
The 'Sunbury Gun' is a rare artillery piece, prominently situated on the 'village green' reservation (the former Stawell Street). It is a 3 inch calibre Armstrong 12 Pounder, manufactured in England in 1864. This was the first wrought iron type of gun, the first breech loading artillery, and the first rifled gun to be used in the British service. It was also one of the type which had been employed in the military encampments at Sunbury during the 1860s and 70s. It was presented to Janet Lady Clarke by the Victorian Government in 1897 as a momento of the late Sir William Clarke's patriotic action in maintaining the Rupertswood Battery of Victorian Horse Artillery. The gun was presented by the Hon. Russell Clarke MLC to the Shire of Bulla in 1922. It was also one of the type of gun which had been employed in the military encampments on the Rupertswood property during the 1860s and 70s. It was restored by the Army in 1978-80.
