    Mortlake War Memorial - Physical Description 1

    The Mortlake war memorial comprises a statue of a soldier in the 'half-post' position, which has been cut from while marble. This sits atop a plinth of basalt above which there is a granite base. It honours those who served in the two great wars and the Vietnam and Korea Wars .The memorial stands in the road reserve set aside for this purpose at the intersection of Shaw Street and Dunlop Street. It is set within a railed enclosure.
    
    COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS
    The Mortlake war memorial is an important example of the kind of war memorials built in the Shire, and in Victoria generally, in the wake of World War I. The memorial at Mortlake, however, is unusual because it is statue of a soldier and further, it is soldier in the unusual stance of the 'half post' position, and is cut from while marble. The war memorial at Port Fairy is also cut from white marble imported from Genoa, Italy, but this was erected somewhat later - in January 1929. The war memorial in nearby Warrnambool (1926; City of Warrnambool) is also a statue cut from white marble, but most of the war memorials erected in the small towns in Moyne Shire were simple obelisks cut from granite or sandstone - for example Koroit (although altered), Chatsworth, Hexham and Framlingham.

    The Mortlake War Memorial, unveiled in 1922 by the Victorian Premier H.S. Lawson, stands at the intersection of Shaw Street and Dunlop Street in the town centre. The Mortlake example is relatively unusual in design for a small town; it represents a soldier in the half-salute position and is cut from white marble.

    The memorial was originally proposed for Mortlake in 1919 to commemorate the lives of those men who were killed serving in the First World War. It is thought to be the work of stone masons Wooles and Carpenter, who are responsible for a great number of the monuments in the Mortlake Cemetery. After the Second World War, the names of 42 servicemen were added and more recently the memorial was rededicated to the wars in Vietnam and Korea.
