ZIMMER FARM COMPLEX - History
PART OF THE PROPERTY (CONTAINING HOUSE RUINS) WAS FIRST PURCHASED BY MICHAEL ZIMMER IN 1852. THE OTHER SECTION WAS PURCHASED BY ZIMMER IN 1863. ZIMMER WAS ONE OF THE FIRST GROUPS OF GERMAN IMMIGRANTS TO THE PORT PHILLIP DISTRICT; THE OLDER MEMBERS SETTLING AT WESTGARTHTOWN, WHILST MANY OF THE YOUNGER MEMBERS PURCHASED LAND AT EPPING. THE LAND STAYED IN THE HANDS OF THE ZIMMER FAMILY UNTIL 1971.ZIMMER FARM COMPLEX - Interpretation of Site
REMAINS OF FARMHOUSE OF ZIMMER FAMILY WHO CONTINUOUSLY OCCUPIED THE FARM FOR APPROX 119 YEARS. THE STONE WALLS ENCLOSE THE BOUNDARIES OF THE FARM AND THE WATER TROUGHS ILLUSTRATE ADAPTATION AND INNOVATION IN FARMING.
ZIMMER FARM COMPLEX - Archaeological Significance
The site is a rare example of German settlement during the 1850s. There is potential for intact domestic deposits and structural remains relating to this early occupation, demonstrating farming and domestic practices.
