HAROLD STREET DRAIN CULVERT - History
A long drain outlet is shown projecting into the bay at the end of Harold St, Middle Park from 1890 to 1925, and could be a pier extension attached to the outlet pipe/ culvert.HAROLD STREET DRAIN CULVERT - Interpretation of Site
The structure appears to have been used as a jetty, as indicated by the installation of handrails along its sides. It is possible that a pier was connected to the end of this structure, as several other similar structures (ie Brookes Jetty, Kerferd Road Pier, Cowderoy Street Drain Culvert and Pier) in this area have been also used for this purpose. It appears the drain outlet was actively utilised to channel stormwater runoff to scour out the areas alongside those piers, a practice that was also undertaken in Ireland.
The drain culvert appears to have been used as a jetty, and as such may have formed part of the recreational landscape of Melbourne through its use for fishing and promenading. This site may be an example of the practice of installing a jetty next to the drain outlet. The drain had the benefit of deepening the berthing area for vessels.
