FISHERMANS BEND FISHING HUTS - History
The huts are significant as some of the earliest fishing residences in Hobsons Bay, and are of social significance to those communities.
Many fishermen's huts were located to the west of Railway Pier (Station Pier) from at least 1864 and subsequent plans also show building in the same area. It is not clear, however, whether the structures shown on the western side of Fisherman's Bend were associated with the Prisoner jetty, as they lie in the area to the adjacent west of this pier. Many fishermen's shacks were still occupied in this area in 1902, and concerns were expressed about their dilapidated condition. The last of the shacks stood in this area until the 1970's. It appears that the earliest structures were probably associated commercial fishing residences, but may later have been used for recreational fishing.
FISHERMANS BEND FISHING HUTS - Interpretation of Site
The foreshore area from Webb Dock to Princes Pier was inspected, but no positive signs of former huts were located, except for a few areas in the Boulevard Reserve where scattered rubble was located. However, no diagnostic artefacts were located that could positively identify or date the site, and therefore could have been landfill deposited to stabilise the area.
