FORMER OLRIG HOMESTEAD SITE - History
The property was purchased by James Malcolm in 1840, soon after which time the core of the farmstead, including the house, will probably have been constructed. On his death in 1878 the property passed to his sons and it was then run by leasees until it was acquired by the Harveys of 'Summerhill' who held it until 1960. At some point the property was purchased by Craigieburn Landholdings. It has recently been acquired by the Catholic Diocese of Melbourne and it is now part of the Mother Theresa Catholic Primary School, the school buildings of which have been constructed to the west of the site.
FORMER OLRIG HOMESTEAD SITE - Interpretation of Site
The site was recorded in 2005 as comprising a redundant bluestone house of two rooms together with outbuildings to its south west including a milking shed and shearing shed dating to the 1900s and a stables dating to the 1950s. The latter were approached by a cobbled driveway from the south which ran to their east, to the west of the house from which it was seperated by a conifer wind-break.
The outbuildings, driveway and conifers have recently been removed through the development of the Mother Theresa Catholic Primary School on the site, construction of which was ongoing at the time of survey. The bluestone house has been renovated, apparently for use as an office and meeting room, with the addition of a frontal verandah, and the well previously recorded immediately to its south west is no longer apparent. A few non-native trees do remain to the south and east of the house.
FORMER OLRIG HOMESTEAD SITE - Archaeological Significance
The area of archaeological sensitivity identified around the house in 2005 would not appear to have been disturbed by the recent construction works, although piles of topsoil observed in the site suggest that it may have been used as a dumping ground for material from the construction of the school, and this would obscure any surviving deposits. The site retains a high potential to yield information concerning farming and domestic practices in the mid 19th century.
FORMER OLRIG HOMESTEAD SITE - Historical Significance
The homestead is historically significant for its association with the mid 19th century farmstead.
