ROYAL HOTEL, TARRAVILLE - History
The Hotel was in use by 1846 but was probably founded in 1844, though the earliest record of a licence appears to be 1846. It remained in use as a pub until the 1890's and remained standing well into the 20th Century. It was one of the earliest pubs in gippsland. It seems likely to have featured several phases of construction, though the chronology of these phases is currently unknown. The builder and first licensee, James Neilson arrived in Gippsland in 1841 with Lord Glengarry, and seems to have built a bridge and track behind the hotel to connect the building with his nearby (and still standing) Woodlot Park property across the river.ROYAL HOTEL, TARRAVILLE - Interpretation of Site
The remains are on the location known to be that of the Royal Hotel. The handmade bricks are consistent with the Hotel's period of construction. Landowner Wayne Caldow's research indicates that there were several associated buildings at the hotel, and this is supported both by a contemporary sketch (see pg. 36 of Adams) and the distribution of site features. Part of the brick scatter, however is the byproduct of the clearing of vegetation in the 1990's.
