STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE:
The single storey brick and stone Gatehouse at the Southern entrance to the Eastern Cemetery in Geelong was erected in c1880 from design prepared by prominent Melbourne Architect, Thomas Watts. This picturesque Gothic Gatehouse is derived from English Tudor gothic traditions, the most notable features being the castellated arty porch and bay windows, unusually decorated cast iron gables, tall chimneys, steep pitched roof and tri-cusped gable insets. The Eastern Cemetery Gate Lodge is a distinctive work of Watts, appropriately designed in the popular Victorian Gothic revival tradition, and one of the finest cemetery gate lodge buildings in Victoria.

This lodge was apparently not built and a new proposal for a lodge/gate house was mooted in c1880. Thomas Watts, a Melbourne Architect, is reputedly the designer of this building.
