Veterans Description for Public
Goornong Soldiers Memorial Hall - Veterans Description for Public
The Goornong Soldiers Memorial Hall originally occupied a timber building constructed in 1889. The Hall was then rebuilt into the current brick building that now caters for diverse community functions.
After World War One and Two, memorial buildings were erected in towns and suburbs across Australia in memory of those who fought and died. One of the most popular types of building was the memorial hall. In some cases memorial halls were built instead of war memorials. Memorial halls typically house honour roll(s) which display the names of local servicemen and women. After their construction memorial halls became important venues for local activity and many are still in use today. Their story is a central part of these communities' histories.
