TARRAWINGEE COMMON SCHOOL 1116 SITE - History
The following is documented within Jones 1977:84:
Education for all
.A public meeting was held in the Shield's Store, Tarrawingee on Tuesday evening, for the purpose of considering the desirability of erecting a school in the township.it was covened with the object eliciting the opinion of the inhabitants regarding the shifting of the school on the Buckland road (which has been closed since 30th November 1867) to a more eligible site in the township...
Within three years, Common School No 1116, built in brick, replaced the old slab structure and became the focus for education at Tarrawinge, untilit too was replaced in 1922.
Rootsweb confirms that there were even more schools in the town: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~surreal/AVNE/Towns/towns-wangaratta.html#tarrawingee)
Approximate Location: 10km east of WangarattaComments: The 'official' township was surveyed prior to 1861 about 5km east of the current township (and close to the cemetery) but was never proclaimed, so some confusion may exist over the official and actual location; also the name of local station taken up in 1837.
Schools: The Catholic Church opened a school (#635) in 1858 and it closed in 1871.
SS616 opened in December 1858 and closed in 1867
SS1116 opened in 1872. The school closed some time after 1970 and a campus of the Wangaratta Primary School now exists in the town
SS1066 opened in 1870 and was called both Tarrawingee Grange and Tarrawingee East during its life. The school closed in 1878 when it was replaced by SS2031 Tarrawingee East at Everton (see Everton).
Churches: In 1866, an Anglican church (St Peter's) was built
Buildings: A public hall is in existence (details of it are unknown)
Cemetery: For details of the cemetery - see website
A 20th century Parish plan sees the common and state schools next to each other (attached) but most likely the reference is for the one school.
TARRAWINGEE COMMON SCHOOL 1116 SITE - Interpretation of Site
The location on the intersection of the Great Alpine Road and the Beechworth Wangaratta Road is the location of the former State School 1116. The school has been updated at least once (in 1922). May also be the site of an earlier slab school said to have been built at Buckland Road; potentially an earlier name for the Great Alpine Road. As a result, there is some potential for archaeological remains below the current school infrastructure. The present visible concrete paths, fencing, garden beds and concrete footing are not included in the assessment for archaeological potential.
TARRAWINGEE COMMON SCHOOL 1116 SITE - Archaeological Significance
The location of the former state school is of medium significance, as it may provide evidence of the layout of the earliest school in the township, as well as the chronology of latter building phases.
TARRAWINGEE COMMON SCHOOL 1116 SITE - Historical Significance
The site is significant as a tangible remnant of a more prosperous period for the township.
