What is significant?
Clyde and Caste Village, comprising two blocks containing eight residential flats at 39 and 41 Kensington Road, South Yarra and designed by Arthur W. Plaisted and constructed by 1940,are significant. The significant attributes are the original American Colonial Revival style form, materials and detailing of the flats, the garden courtyard setting, and the low brick front fence with integrated letterboxes. The high degree of external integrity when viewed from Kensington Road is integral to the significance of the place.
Later alterations and additions are not significant.
How is it significant?
Clyde and Castle Village are of local architectural significance to the City of Stonnington.
Why is it significant?
Architecturally, Castle Village and Clyde flats are a well designed and detailed ensemble of American Colonial Revival buildings. The two buildings create a harmonious whole, united by their identical materials, roof types and massing in their original garden setting. Further interest is provided by the subtle variation of brickwork, window and doorway treatments between the two, with more traditional elements applied to Castle Village. The significance is enhanced by the high degree of external integrity of the flats and their setting. They are also significant as a design by Arthur W. Plaisted who was one of the pre-eminent designers of residential flats during the inter-war period. (Criteria D, E & H)

CLYDE & CASTLE VILLAGE - Physical Description 1
Clyde and Castle Village flats are two two-storey L-shaped wings, which create a central courtyard open to the street. The courtyard has concrete paths down either side, with small gardens in front of the flats. In the centre is a strip of lawn with a mature exotic tree half way down. The front of the property is marked by a low brick fence of apricot brick, with curved wing walls and integral mailboxes marking the central pedestrian entry. Narrow driveways are located along the north and south boundaries, leading to rear garages (the garages were not sighted).
The two wings are both constructed of apricot brick with high, hip roofs covered in Marseille tiles. Chimneys are also of apricot brick with subtle corbelling at the top. The elevations facing the central courtyard are treated as the main facades. They are rather flat, with slightly projecting bays to mark some of the entries, with a corresponding projecting hip to the roof.
The brickwork to both wings has prominent quoins at the corners, but differs in details. Castle Village has a rather flat cornice of corbelled brick bands and dentils created by brick headers. Clyde, on the other hand, has a less classical cornice comprising a single corbelled band with triangular brick motifs below. This same band is repeated above some entries.
The two wings are also subtly differentiated by their windows. Castle Village has mainly six-over-nine French windows, with wrought-iron safety grilles to the first floor and some smaller six-over-six double-hung windows. Clyde has the same French windows to the first floor, along with four-over-four sash windows. The ground floor windows are quite varied, and include a large bow window and a full-length canted bay, both with multipane lights.
Castle Village also has more traditional doorway treatments, which are simplified and flattened version of American Colonial Revival porticos - some with a flat entablature and others with a swan's neck broken pediment. Clyde has simple render quoining around its entries.
