Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Hamilton Baptist Church - Memorial Window Description & History
A series of six windows was unveiled in the Hamilton Baptist Church in August 1933, all of which were installed to commemorate men who died in the Great War, one of whom was Walter Filmer.
Walter Stephen Filmer was a single 22 year-old schoolteacher when he enlisted on 3 February 1916. He had spent a year as a senior cadet and was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Citizen Forces, which probably accounted for his promotion to acting Sergeant a month later. He embarked with reinforements for 22 Battalion and rose through the ranks to be appointed 2nd Lieutenant. On 3 May 1917 he was one of many in 6 Brigade who losttheir lives near Bullecourt; heis commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
Image is representative of all six commemorative windows.
