Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Ascot Vale Methodist Church - Memorial Window Description & History
The Ascot Vale Methodist Church was formed in 1888. In 1926 the ladies of the congregation offered to provide a window to the soldiers and shortly afterwards Melbourne stained glass artist, William Montgomery, provided a two-light design, St. George and St. Alban, 'suitable for a Soldiers' Memorial', to the church secretary, G. Yeo, Esq. Montgomery quoted 65 guineas for the two-light or 35 guineas if only one of the two lights was commissioned. Mr. Yeo commissioned the pair on behalf of the church, and it was installed before an account for £68.5.0 was issued on 12 March 1927. The watercolour sketch is held in the National Gallery of Australia collection. This illustration is from a black and white photograph of the sketch, held in the William Montgomery Collection, State Library of Victoria.
