Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Lancefield Uniting Church - Memorial Window Description & History
The window was designed very simply with a background of diamond quarries, inset with the Royal Australian Navy badge and an inscription plate in the lower section of the window.
Henry Haddon Russell was born on 23 December 1899 at Lancefield; 'Haddon' was his grandmother's maiden name and that by which he was generally known. By the end of the First World War, Russell was just old enough to join the Navy for seven years, serving from 1 August 1918 when he entered HMAS Cerberus. He served as a cook on ships that included the Sydney, Warrego and Australia until his discharge. On 22 May 1940, Russell reported for duty once again, serving on Penguin II and III, Maitland and Westralia. He was one of the crew on HMAS Canberra when it was sunk during the Battle of Savo Island on 9 August 1942 but, unlike so many others, he survived and continued in other ships and land bases before he returned to Lancefield on discharge from HMAS Lonsdale in 1947. Haddon Russell died on 2 June 1967.
