Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Littlejohn Memorial Presbyterian Chapel - Memorial Window Description & History
375 Old Boys of Scotch College, Melbourne lost their lives during the Second World War, a staggering number. AWar Memorial Appeal was officially launched at a public meeting at the Hawthorn Town Hall and, as well as the window for the west wall of the chapel, included funds to improve the Memorial Hall andadd theirnames to the Honour Roll. David Taylor Kellock was commissioned by the chapel's architect, John FD Scarborough, to design the window. The design represented sacrifice and the three figures depicted the army (Joshua the warrior), the navy (Christ walking the waves) and the air force (Elijah), with the badges of each force in base panels. It was dedicated by the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, the Rt. Rev. JE Owen on 1 October 1951 in the presence of many of the relatives of the men.
David Taylor Kellock (1913-1988) trained in Edinburgh, Scotland and came to Australia before 1939. This was one of three stained glass window he designed on this scale for school chapels, the others were west windows for Geelong Grammar School, Corio, and Melbourne Grammar School, South Yarra. Names of the Old Boys commemorated in the Scotch College Memorial Hall and Chapel are listed in Nicholson, First Hundred Years Scotch College 1851-1951.
