Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Melbourne Scots' Presbyterian Church - Memorial Window Description & History
The most recent of all the windows in the Scots' Church, Melbourne, The Gift of the Holy Spiritand an accompanying mosaic of the Resurrection were unveiled by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in 1963. Both were designed and made by Melbourne artist, Alan Sumner. Notes on Sumner's rough sketch for the window indicated that although the window was a tribute to the men who died in the two World Wars, he intended to emphasise peace through the placement of the dove in God's hands at the head of the window and the raised hands of the people below aspiring to grasp a peaceful future. The lower section of the window showed the despair and destruction caused by war.
Initially, the two trefoil windows were to contain Alpha and Omega, symbols of the beginning and the end, but this was replaced with the badges of the Australian Army, Navy and Air Force and Red Cross, painted in exemplary style by Sumner. The mosaic depicted the empty tomb on the left with the resurrected Christ on the right to symboliseVictory over Death.
