Stained Glass Window at Colac St. John's Anglican Church - Memorial Window Description & History
Melbourne stained glass artist, Alan Sumner, adapted cartoons designed by William 'Jock' Frater, the senior artist at EL Yencken & Co., for this pair of windows that were made in the early post-Second World War years. The style follows a traditional format and Sumner also used the image of Joshua for another memorial window at The Church of Paul the Apostle, South Melbourne. Agony in the Garden was taken from an 1890 painting by Heinrich Hoffmann, aparticularly popular image for stained glass. The Biblical content of the design was juxtaposed with the inclusion of military objects in the heads of the windows, including aeroplanes and tents, whichanchor its purpose to both God andcountry.
