Mervyn Napier Waller (1893-1972) designed a number of commemorative soldier memorials in the years prior to embarking on his monumental work for the Hall of Memory at theAustralian War Memorial, Canberra. In this interpretation of the subject the figure of Christ on the Cross is surroundered by the profiles of participants in the event and a number of quotes that create a wide frame to the central scene.Christ's mother, Mary was placed prominently in the base panel where her sorrow is evident.Seventeen men from the parish died on active service during the Second World War.
