Stained Glass Window at Camperdown St. Paul's Anglican Church - Memorial Window Description & History
Discussion on the window began on 20 February 1926, to be the gift of Mrs. Adams and her brother, Mr. T. Chester Manifold. The source for the design was a painting by John Pettie, The Vigil, which Montgomery adapted to suit the window format. Montgomery prepared several rough sketches and a watercolour, sepia ink and pencil sketch on paper, drawn to 'inch scale' as noted in the lower margin and signed 'W. Montgomery'. The final design was not approved by the Bishop of Ballarat until after Montgomery's death. As is commonly the case, minor changes were made to the sketch during the enlargement to the full scale cartoon. Of particular note was removal of the residual architectural canopy, the rose window, and the glimpse of landscape in the distant background. Instead, the kneeling knight was depicted in an enclosed space, more akin to the original painting. While these changes are minimal to the general concept, they suggest Napier Waller's 'hand' during the cartoon stage. The window was installed in February 1928 and dedicated by Archdeacon Bennett from Warrnambool.
Unlike almost all other men and womencommemorated on this database, James Chester Manifold (1867-1918) was not in the armed services but was a pastoralist and philanthropist, fourth son of John Manifold of Victoria's Western District. Chester Manifold entered public life as a member of Hampden Shire Council where he also served two terms as its President. He became the first elected member of Federal Parliament for the seat of Corangamite but retired due to ill health in 1903. He reluctantly returned to parliament in 1913 after defeating JH Scullin and he remained the sitting member until the time of his death. In England during the First World War, and keen to assist the war effort,he volunteered to report on conditions in military camps and hospitals and to investigate rehabilitation schemes in Canada and the United States. He died at sea on 30 October 1918, unexpectedly, from pneumonia, only one day out from San Francisco. He was buried at sea.
