Statement of Significance
The Hudsons Road Rising Mains were a component part of the subsurface infrastructure in the redesign of the Melbourne Sewerage Scheme, as a result of the 1888 Royal Commission, held into the sanitation crisis facing Melbourne due to its rapidly growing population.
The Hudsons Road Rising Mains are of archaeological significance, as former 1890s supporting subsurface infrastructure, associated with both the Main Outfall Sewer and the Sewer Pumping Station. Repair and replacement of the sewerage infrastructure occurred since its establishment in the 1890s. Further, modifications to the Melbourne Sewerage Scheme commenced during the 1960s with the replacement of the original brick and bluestone open channeled viaducts to concrete covered viaducts. It is not documented how the Rising Mains were decommissioned or their condition. It is not documented whether the original Hudsons Road Rising Mains remained largely intact, or whether sections were repaired and/or replaced over time. The Rising Mains have been a redundant feature for over 50 years.
It is anticipated that there is research potential associated with the Rising Mains in facilitating the understanding the maintenance and decommissioning process of the 1960s sewerage infrastructure.
