Statement of Significance
The site is significant because it contributes to the overall understanding of gold mining in the Bendigo region and its effects on the landscape. The site is located in proximity to a number of places that are already listed on the Victorian Heritage Inventory: H7724-0057 (Deebles/Edwards United Pyrites Works) and the H7724-0060 (Tambour Major) mine are located nearby and H1355 (Victoria Hill Quartz Mine Complex), listed on the Victorian Heritage Register is located approximately 2 km to the east. Also on the Victorian Heritage Register is H0827 (Goldmines Hotel), H2211 (Fortuna Villa), both located less than 2 km to the east of the site; these places are reflective of the wealth and industry generated by the gold rushes.

MAIDEN GULLY DIGGINGS - History
The site is located on the south side of the Calder Highway, which started as an informal track linking Melbourne and Bendigo, but which quickly became the main route to the diggings once gold was discovered in Bendigo. Gold was discovered in the Bendigo region in 1851 but it was not discovered in Maiden Gully until 1859. The area became associated with the Myers Flat mining area. A map provided by the City of Greater Bendigo shows mining activity in the area (see attached map with mine shaft marked by red dots). The miners would have been following the Great Eastern Gully lead.
MAIDEN GULLY DIGGINGS - Historical Significance
Maiden Gully is assessed as being of local historical significance for its association with mining uses in this area of Victoria. The site presents an opportunity to contribute to our understanding of the gold mining and its effect on the landscape in the Bendigo area.
MAIDEN GULLY DIGGINGS - Archaeological Significance
Documentary evidence suggests that the diggings are associated with the Myers Flat mining area. The site is comprised of more than 100 shallow depressions and pits related to mining activities on the Great Eastern Gully lead. The site has the potential to contain archaeological features, deposits and artefacts that could provide insights into the early mining practices and landscape modifications of the Bendigo region.
