Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The Johnswood archaeological site is significant for its association with John Wedge and the Wedge Family, in addition to its continuous occupation as a smallhold farm. The site has a demonstrated historical use as a dairy farm and late nineteenth-century apiary. It is noted throughout historical sale advertisements the property once contained a substantial timber homestead, necessary outbuildings and orchard. Any historical archaeological deposits associated with the historical use of the property are significant.
How is it significant?
The site is of high local historical significance and historical archaeological significance.
Why is it significant?
The site is significant for its association with the Wedge Family and its potential to contain the archaeological remains of John Wedge’s 1850s homestead and farm. The site has historical evidence of continual occupation and use and has the potential to contain archaeological features, deposits, and artefacts relating to the agricultural use of the land. The presence of a late nineteenth-century apiary is significant as a rare site type that is not currently represented on the Victorian Heritage Inventory.
