Statement of Significance
B Listed - Regional Significance
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCEThe Wesleyan Methodist Church Chapel at Ceres was erected 1855 to the design of Mr Hope, an architect about whom virtually nothing is known. The chapel was built to serve both as a church and schoolhouse for the considerable population of Ceres which in the 1850s was a burgeoning vineyard and grazing district. The structure is a typical Wesleyan Chapel erected without ostentation or direct reference to historical style. The chapel is constructed of ubiquitous Barrabool freestone donated by Nichols McCann, a local stonemason and quarryman of the Ceres district and is part of an identifiable group of buildings in the small village.
