Statement of Significance
Architecturally, a near complete example from a limited group of surviving 19th Century urban stables of this size, now without the house context but large enough to establish its own character: of metropolitan importance. Historically, closely related to the area within Flemington which was intimately associated with horse training and riding thus exemplifying the area's special metropolitan role: of metropolitan importance.

OLD CANTERBURY STABLES - Physical Description 1
Traditional in form, with the nave and side-aisles of a Medieval church, the gabled profile is clad in red brickwork, with monitor lighting supplied to a loft-mezzanine and tall timbered doors fitted to a segment-arched doorway; the companion of which has been bricked in, on the south-side. Brick floors echo the wall-fabric indoors and a residential character is evoked by the typical Edwardian period chimney.
The skillion-roofed sheltered yards to the east of the stables have been removed; windows facing north have been sheeted over; and the openings on the south have been bricked up. The house and yards have been demolished from the Canterbury Street frontage.
Isolated from, and set back within the street: devoid of context except the earlier housing on its south side.
