Statement of Significance

The house at no. 14 Brewster Street, Essendon was designed by architect, Graeme Gunn, and built in 1966. It is aesthetically distinguished (Criterion E) by its orientation around a courtyard in the manner of a Roman villa and by the use of post and beam
construction on a grid at a time when this device was only emerging as a popular system of domestic construction wherein the structural elements of a house generated its visual and decorative form.

      HOUSE - Physical Description 1

      A recent single storeyed warm grey cement block house with narrow and deeply recessed openings protected by shutters and having a narrow mansard shaped roof in "Klip Lok" decking with a gutter profile reinforcing the effect of the mansard and resting on battens supported by a projecting block course. Inside, the spaces' are arranged around an enclosed courtyard with pergola. There are exposed beams to the ceilings and the joinery is in cedar. The floors are understood to be quarry paved tile except for the carpeted floor of the living room which is one step below general floor level.
