Statement of Significance
This place is of State significance and is included on the Victorian Heritage Register (H1205) - please refer to the VHR place record for the statement of significance. The local statement of significance is as follows:
Architecturally, a skilfully designed and grand row-house composition which is unequalled in this genre for its ornament, detail and use of three dimensional elements also an essential element in two important streetscapes; of state importance.
Historically, a development by a well known Melbourne businessman, of regional and local interest.

NATHAN'S TERRACE - Physical Description 1
There are six houses per row: each row is parapetted and composed in two bays with Ionic porticoes central to each bay. Each bay terminates on a room sited foreward from the others, at the building line, and each of these thrust rooms possesses a broken pediment at the parapet and terminates an iron ornamented verandah. Each verandah has iron picket balustrading. A lane between 1 and 3 Shields Street interrupts the rhythm of this composition. Each house is unexpectedly double fronted, given their closeness to the street and construction date: this fact is obscured by the composition.
Generally original except for the absence of the broken pediment over 11 Shields Street and parapet orbs or urns throughout: enough evidence exists on each row to restore lost elements.
Pivotted from the corner post office the two rows are major streetscape elements and contemporary with surrounding dwellings.
