Statement of Significance

Architecturally, a distinctive and highly successful design, using a style uncommon in 19th century commercial architecture; possessing early decorative use of Australian flora; and superbly sited on an elevated corner site, reinforced by adjacent, contemporary architecture: of State importance.

Historically, of local importance as perhaps the first private national company building in the area and of regional interest as one of a relatively small number of banks built by a now defunct company.

      ENGLISH, SCOTTISH & AUSTRALIAN CHARTERED BANK (FORMER) - Physical Description 1

      A two-storeyed polychrome brick Italian Gothic revival styled bank and residence building with a distinctive quadruple gabled parapet, with occuli vents, a high gabled slate roof, an assortment of Medieval ornamental devices including an oriel, a window bay, pointed and flat-arched windows; and fanciful occuli which shed downpipes from the parapet gutter behind. Trim is in Waurn Ponds sandstone and the base is basalt. Of particular note are the gum nuts and leaves into the tympanum's of each of the three main, lower level windows. A wrought-iron fence is used at the boundary. Trim paint colours have changed.

      Streetscape
      A major corner, designed to relate to multiple viewpoints, opposite a contemporary shop row (409-15), and in an area generally developed from the 1880s onwards. Also the subject of distant views from across the Moonee Ponds Creek because of its superior height.
