Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The former Tadgell Brothers Office, designed by Frederick Tadgell and constructed c.1902, at 13 Norwood Crescent, Moonee Ponds is significant.

Non-original alterations and additions to the house including the building at 15 Norwood Crescent are not significant.

How is it significant?
The former Tadgell Brothers Office at 13 Norwood Crescent, Moonee Ponds is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the City of Moonee Valley.

Why is it significant?
It is historically significant as evidence of the recovery after the 1890s depression and for its associations with Tadgell Brothers who played an important role in the development of Moonee Ponds in the early decades of the twentieth century. This office was the first commerical building constructed in Norwood Crescent, which would develop as an adjunct to the Puckle Street centre after World War I. (Criteria A & H)

Architecturally, it is significant as a pretentious and witty design for its small scale, designed to attract the most attention from the smallest of spaces, as required by its use and located opposite its progenitor the railway. (Criteria D & E)

      TADGELL BROTHERS OFFICE (FORMER) - Physical Description 1

      A narrow-fronted, quaintly scaled stuccoed building with a square slated tower topped by a cast-iron widow's walk, a mansard main roof with iron cresting and a deep parapet entablature set above a heavy string-mould. A dainty-scrolled pediment rests at the base of the tower, providing embellishment to the entrance bay, with its impressive six-panelled door. The design hints at the extravagances of the French Second Empire style.

      The building is in good condition and is generally original, except for the orbs which once adorned each parapet pier and the bold signs painted onto the available plinth and entablatures. A flag pole once sprouted from the tower. In a streetscape context it terminates the row of early twentieth century shops in Norwood Crescent.
