Statement of Significance
SIGNIFICANCE: »A very good and rather pretentious example of the Moderne style
which takes full advantage of the slope. Designed by Wardrop, a Melbourne
architect and built by local builder Ray Patterson for 7,200 pounds on land worth
400 pounds with Glenthompson bricks, laid by bricklayer Kean.
Residence
28 Carmichael Street
Built of fashionable cream brick for the Grimes family, and designed by the architect Wardrop, this house is a very good and rather pretentious example of the Moderne style which takes full advantage of the slope. Of local significance, the building and the garden remain substantially intact. Peter Wardrop, the son of the designing architect, was a very good friend of the Grimes family, his optometry business being adjacent to the Grimes Jewellery in Gray Street.
The garden indicates a well planted original form although it is not now in a good condition. Features include Fraxinus oxycarpa, Raywood on the front lawn and two Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, Aurea at the entrance gate. The surviving form and plantings compliment the house.
