POOWONG WORLD WAR I SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL - Physical Description 1
The Poowong World War 1 Soldiers' memorial is constructed from Harcourt granite and comprises a pyramidal obelisk on a stepped base. It is enclosed by a fence of rough-hewn stone posts with metal chains. The front of the memorial has the following inscription in raised letters:
Memorial to Fallen Soldiers. Erected by the residents of Poowong riding of the Shire of Poowong and Jeetho, in memory of the men of the district who gave their lives in the cause of Liberty and Empire in the Great War, 1914-19.
Beneath this has been added later:
And the 1939-1945 War.
Below this inscription there is the insignia of the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces in bronze. Below this is a bronze plaque featuring a World War I battle scene.
On the left and right sides is inscribed in raised letters 'Honor roll of the fallen' with names of soldiers from the district. On the rear side have been added the names of fallen soldiers in the 1939-45 War.
The memorial is situated in the median strip of Nyora Road in the centre of Poowong township at the intersection of the roads to Loch (to the south) and Drouin (to the north). Adjacent to the memorial is a mature Plane (Platanus sp.), which can be seen in early (c.1920s) photos and contributes to its setting.
